Merry Christmas to Akita

Phew!  Christmas is nearly here.  I just wanted to write a little something for one of my dearest friends, akitamonster. She is also a Zuko/Aang fangirl so I wanted to make her a cute ficlet. Um, I don't really think there's enough Zukaang in this... I'm really off my writing game with everything that's going in my life right now. It's just some cheesy post-serious stuff, and I know it's kind of short and pointless. My plan is to add on to this later, I have some plans for it.
But Akita, I hope you enjoy it regardless, and Merry Christmas. <3

Appa touched down at the South Pole in a flurry of snow, then immediately let out a happy groan and flopped down on his belly. Normally Aang would be worried about his friend catching a chill, but Appa had been outfitted with six extra-extra large mittens, along with his winter coat, just for the trip.

Their long journey to the South Pole had worn them all out, and Appa deserved the rest. Aang, on the other hand, was eager to get up and stretch and test out the cold weather gear he had bought on the way down. Winter in the South Pole was no joke. His breaths escaped him in misty puffs as he looked out excitedly over the cluster of igloos that were Sokka and Katara's home.

"We're here, Zuko! We made it to the South Pole!" Aang turned his gaze to his co pilot, who was crammed against the edge of the saddle with an unhappy look on his face. Zuko wore quite a few layers less than Aang- he hadn't taken to winter shopping with the same enthusiasm that Aang did, so he used firebending to keep him warm. Aang wondered if it wasn't working well enough.

"What's wrong?" Aang asked.

"I'm not really sure it's a good idea for me to be here," Zuko said slowly. "The last time I was at the South Pole, I attacked the village."

"Yeah, I remember," Aang said with something of a nostalgic grin. "But isn't that all the more reason for you to be here? To make things right?"

Zuko scowled and stared out at the blinding whiteness.

"I doubt these people want to see me again."

Aang had been worried about this attitude. He had a feeling that Zuko had probably spent the majority of their trip second-guessing himself.

"You don't know them like I do, Zuko. You have to give them a chance to forgive you."

It was hard for Zuko to keep frowning in the face of Aang's optimism. Aang could see Zuko's negativity crumpling, so he leap off of Appa's back with a whoop. Zuko followed soon after, more sedately.

Snow must have just fallen, because the whole landscape was brushed in soft, untouched white. When Aang landed, he sunk down to his knees in the snow. Steam rose from where Zuko stepped.
"I always admired the Water Tribe for making a living in a place like this," Zuko said as he pulled his clothes tighter around himself.

"I think it could be kind of fun," Aang said. As if to prove his point, he dive-rolled away from Zuko, gathered up a snowball, and nailed the Firelord in the face with it.

Aang's laughter echoed all the way to the ears of the Water Tribe members. Two in particular recognized it almost immediately. Sokka stopped his boomerang sharpening, Katara looked up from repairing an igloo, and both of them exchanged a knowing glance. In the next moment they dropped their chores and went tearing off in the direction of the sound.

Sokka and Katara found Aang and Zuko engaged in a full on snowball fight. Zuko was drenched, with steam coming off of him, while Aang was able to dodge most of the snowballs aimed at him. He caught sight of his two old Water Tribe friends, and waved- Zuko took the opportunity and got his snowy revenge.

"Aang! You're here!" Katara wiped the snow from Aang's face before pulling him into a hug. "And you have hair again!"

Aang smiled into Katara's familiar embrace. "It's keeping my head warm."

Katara switched her attention to Zuko next, and gave him a hug just as welcoming. "It's good to see you."

Sokka grasped Aang's arm and ruffled his short hair. "You guys are crazy, visiting the South Pole in the middle of winter."

"Isn't it always winter here?" Zuko asked as he also shook Sokka's hand. Sokka laughed.

"There's really only two seasons here: cold and colder. You just missed a really intense storm."

"I think we might have caught it up in the air," Aang said, pointing behind them with his thumb. "Appa's exhausted."

As if Aang had called him, Appa descended on Sokka and Katara, greeting them in his own special way and leaving them drenched in saliva.

"Not tired enough," Katara said as she wiped her face with a laugh.

"Is that the Avatar?" Came a frail voice from behind them. It sounded vaguely familiar to Aang, and he turned to see a very wrinkled face.

"Gran-Gran, you shouldn't be out here in the wind," Katara scolded. Kanna waved a hand at her, and Aang saw a mischievous spark in the old woman's eyes that he was sure Sokka had inherited.

"It's good to see you well," said Aang, with a little bow to Kanna.

"And it's wonderful to see you, Avatar Aang, in this time of peace," she replied. Her eyes traveled to Zuko, who was attempting to hide himself in the background, and her smile faded somewhat.
"The Firelord."

Zuko took a brave step forward, and Kanna considered him silently for a few seconds. Her eyes, sharp as ever even if they were bordered by crow's feet, missed nothing.

"I haven't heard much news of the outside world. But from what I do know, you are doing a good job. Much better than the job your father did. Even if you used to threaten old ladies."

"Th-thank you," Zuko said, over Sokka's guffaws. Kanna turned her back on him.

"What are we doing out here in the cold? It's not good for my old bones." And that was that. The five of them headed back to the village- Katara in front, creating a path in the snow, Sokka lending an arm for his grandmother, and Aang and Zuko bringing up the rear. With everyone's back turned, Aang slipped his gloved hand into Zuko's.

"I knew they'd like you," he whispered in the Firelord's ear.
